Maakbaar Amsterdam

In 2007 and 2008 I taught with Martijn van Tol and Joost Janmaat the Master course “Maakbaarheid in de Grote Stad” [Social Engineering in the Amsterdam Metrolis] at the University of Amsterdam. Action is analysis was the course slogan. Students worked with and against public and corporate urban operators in order to decipher complex social, spatial and cultural problems. Parallel to a 14 week teaching course we programmed a Masters of Intervention lecture series with notable guests as James C. Scott, Erik Gerritsen, Alex Scordelis, Stefano Boeri and Nader Vosoughian.

The project resulted, amongst others, in a contribution to a cahier of Open magazine on Social Engineering and an insert in Volume magazine #16 on Engineering Society.
